I told him that it might be possible to do a Spring-colored bird……to which he condemned my lack of respect for the law and began a lecture on how wrong it would be to shoot a bird in the Spring, and wasn’t I afraid of losing my license……I finally assured him I had something else in mind. He said he wished we could shoot them in the Spring because he really wanted a drake in breeding plumage. It wasn’t long after that that I had a customer bring in a drake Ruddy Duck. Turns out, he “made” it from a regular old fall bird.

Jeff once posted a photo of what appeared to be a nice Spring colored Ruddy duck, which got folks wanting to know where he got the bird. Which leads me back to the lowly Ruddy Duck. He is not afraid to experiment and has created several reproductions of extinct or very rare species, many frankly I wouldn’t even know the names of. Jeff also raises several exotic birds on his property, and has an intimate knowledge of feathered subjects. I have come to know Jeff via the internet and have marveled over photos of his mounts, mainly the large cranes and raptors he is so fond of. Jeff Brown operates J- Bird Taxidermy out of ………. But leave it to a taxidermist to figure out a way to “make” a Spring-colored bird out of a Fall-colored one.

The not-so-vibrant little birds therefore enjoy a relatively free pass on their migratory route. They are a small, not-so-tasty duck that nature has denied their becoming decked out in colorful nuptial plumage until well after hunting season has closed (in most of the US anyway). I don’t even think there is a decoy company that manufactures a Ruddy Duck decoy. Ruddy Ducks aren’t much of a sought-after trophy in the world of waterfowling….
